The 5786 Rabbi Arthur N. Bielfeld Lecture Series Presents

Gaslighting, Dogwhistles, and Encampments:
Antisemitism and Antizionism on Canadian Campuses since October 7

In-Person at Temple Emanu-El and on Zoom. Registration required below.

Across Canadian campuses, debates about Israel/Palestine have increasingly overlapped with patterns of antisemitism—sometimes openly, and sometimes through coded language, “gaslighting,” and boundary-blurring rhetoric. In this timely Rabbi Arthur N. Beilfeld Lecture Series program, Professor Deidre Butler will explore how antisemitism and antizionism can intersect in campus discourse and protest culture since October 7, and what students, faculty, and institutions need to understand in order to protect academic freedom, inclusion, and civil dialogue.

About the Speaker
Professor Deidre Butler is the Director of the Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies at Carleton University and an Associate Professor of Religion (Jewish Studies). She is also the co-founder and co-chair of NECA (Network of Engaged Canadian Academics), a non-partisan, educational network that promotes academic freedom, intellectual pluralism/viewpoint diversity, and evidence-based approaches to combating antisemitism in Canadian universities and colleges.

About NECA
NECA (Network of Engaged Canadian Academics / Réseau des professeur.e.s canadien.ne.s engagé.e.s) was formed in 2022 in response to growing concerns about antisemitism on Canadian campuses. It brings together hundreds of Jewish and non-Jewish academics from institutions across Canada to support research, education, and constructive campus dialogue, and to help campuses address antisemitism while upholding academic freedom. Learn more about NECA HERE.
