Part of our renowned "2020 Lecture Series"

In this time of COVID lock-downs, closures, and physical distancing, we need innovation more than ever to help older adults maintain good physical and cognitive health, and live their best possible lives.  Dr. Sekuler will discuss how she and her colleagues at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute are moving from ideas to impact. She will also draw on examples from the vast array of innovations supported by the Baycrest-powered Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation, and discuss her vision of aging in the future.

Dr. Allison Sekuler received her Ph.D. from the University of California Berkley. After a long and distinguished career as a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto and at McMaster University, in September 2017, she was appointed Vice President Research and Sandra Rotman Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience and Managing Director of the Rotman Institute, Baycrest Health Sciences. In March, 2018, Dr. Sekuler was appointed the Managing Director of the Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation led by Baycrest, where she works to ensure that aging and brain health solutions are developed, tested, and disseminated so that  older adults and their caregivers can live their best possible lives.
Dr. Sekuler's research focuses on perception, aging, and cognitive neuroscience, and aims to develop methods to detect, prevent, and treat age-related sensory- and cognitive-decline.  Dr. Sekuler has served on numerous boards and currently serves as Chair of the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada's Public Value Impact Panel, as well as serving on the boards and research committees for Hamilton Health Sciences, the York VISTA Innovation program, and the Canadian Brain Research Strategy. Among Dr. Sekuler’s many awards, she was named the country’s first Canada Research Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience, and last year, she was recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network. In her spare time, she recently started playing the drums, and currently is trying to learn to speak Hebrew and Japanese.
