Books & Biscotti: AuthorTalk with Dr. Janna Nadler and Dawn Promislow

Thursday, March 30, 2023 8 Nisan 5783

1:00 PM - 2:30 PMOnline

Temple Emanu-El is pleased to host a special event with
Dr. Janna Nadler and Dawn Promislow
as we introduce a “novel” approach for a book review.
Janna is one of our veteran book reviewers and she will be our moderator for an AuthorTalk with the very talented Dawn Promislow, author of the novel, Wan.

Janna and Dawn will enlighten us with an in depth discussion of the exquisitely drawn characters,
the themes in the novel and the compelling story set in South Africa in the 1970’s.
This AuthorTalk promises to be a very exciting addition to our Books&Biscotti spring session.
We hope you will join us for this opportunity to meet Dawn
and learn more about her work and novel with Janna’s guidance.
There will be a Q&A at the end of the event.

Synopsis: Wan
Narrated in a completely distinctive and mesmerizing voice, Wan is the story of Jacqueline, a privileged artist in 1970’s South Africa. After an anti-apartheid activist comes to hide in her garden house, Jacqueline’s carefully constructed life begins to unravel. Written in beautiful and spare prose, this extraordinary debut novel grapples with questions of complicity and guilt, of privilege, and of the immeasurable value of art and life.

About the Author
Dawn Promislow was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, and has lived in Toronto since 1987. Her collection, Jewels and Other Stories,  was published in 2010. Wan is her first novel. Dawn has taught creative writing at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in a workshop she designed that drew connections between writing and visual art. She has spoken at schools, book clubs, universities, arts festivals, libraries, and on CBC Radio about writing and short stories.
