Upon his retirement in 2001, Rabbi Arthur Bielfeld's loving congregation established a lecture series in his honour. Past speakers have included outstanding Canadians who have impacted the world through their work: General Romeo Dallaire, the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson,  Stephen Lewis,  Dr. Samantha Nutt, and Dr. Larry Librach.  

This year, the Arthur N. Bielfeld Lecture Fund proudly presents Mark Sandler speaking on "The Scourge of Contemporary Antisemitism and How to Fight It."

Mark Sandler, LL.B., LL.D. (honoris causa)

Mr. Sandler is the Chair of the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism (ALCCA), a coalition of about 60 organizations that address antisemitism through advocacy, education and training, and respectful dialogue. He is widely recognized as one of Canada’s leading criminal lawyers and pro bono advocates. He has been involved in combatting antisemitism for over 40 years, initially as National Chair and Senior Counsel of the League for Human Rights, B’nai Brith Canada. He has lectured extensively on legal remedies to combat hate, and has promoted respectful Muslim-Jewish, Sikh-Jewish and Black-Jewish dialogues. He has appeared before Parliamentary committees and in the Supreme Court of Canada on multiple occasions on issues relating to antisemitism and hate activities. He is a former member of the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, a three-time elected Bencher of the Law Society of Ontario, senior counsel/advisor to more than 20 public inquiries or independent systemic reviews, and recipient of the criminal profession’s highest honour, the G. Arthur Martin Medal, for his contributions to the administration of criminal justice.
