Terrorism is on the rise. Settlements are expanding. Tensions are on a constant boil. No peace process is in sight. Security analyst, Yossi Alpher has been warning for years that Israel and Palestine are on a perilous slippery slope. Where is this heading? How did we get here? Why is merely “managing the conflict” so dangerous? How are the leaderships of both nations failing their people? And what can be done? Alpher will address these questions and much more.
Yossi Alpher is an esteemed independent Israeli security analyst. He is the former director of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University, a former senior official in the Mossad and a former Israeli intelligence officer. During the Camp David Summit in 2000, he served as Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Ehud Barak, working with him on the Israel-Palestinian peace process. Along with senior Palestinian politician and academic Ghassan Khatib, he co-edited a long-running Israeli-Palestinian dialogue column called bitterlemons.org. He is the author of six books, including his latest: Death Tango: Ariel Sharon, Yasser Arafat and Three Fateful Days in March.
About Death Tango
Death Tango traces the Middle East dynamic back to March 27–29, 2002. Those days saw three cataclysmic events: the most bloody and traumatic Arab terrorist attack in Israel’s history, the Arab League's adoption of the Arab Peace Initiative, and Israel's invasion and reoccupation of the West Bank in Operation Defensive Shield. Based on extensive interviews and deep personal knowledge, Alpher's book tells the story of these three critical events, analyzes their interaction and significance and discusses how Arabs and Israelis are dancing a kind of “death tango.”
This evening is co-sponsored by Canadian Friends of Peace Now and Temple Emanu-El
