The Diary of Anne Frank

In a rare approach, we will be reviewing a book we are all acquainted with and this is one of the few times we will be rereading a piece of writing. As we all know, The Diary of Anne Frank is a book of writings from the Dutch-language diary kept by Anne Frank while she was  in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The family was apprehended in 1944, and Anne Frank died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945. After the war ended, the diary was retrieved and given to Otto Frank, Anne's father, who was the family's sole survivor. The diary has been published in more than 70 different languages and is included in several lists of the top books of the 20 th century.
Reading The Diary of Anne Frank as an adult will be a different experience and a very worthwhile exploration of the text through Dr. Morris's unique lens. We will be provided with a new perspective on an old, precious and valuable document. We will be looking at how the diary has aged as well as how we ourselves have changed and we will examine what happens to material we have read when we were younger. This lecture promises to reveal much about the diary and history as read from an adult point of view and at a very different time in our world.

Dr. Harriet Morris holds a PhD in 19th Century English Literature from the University of Toronto.
